Souls 4 Souls Project

As a building principal, I've really challenged the teachers to do activities to make our kids better problem solvers and thinkers. There are too many times that our kids can memorize facts, but have they become better at actually figuring solutions to problems.

Mrs. Krichau has taken this challenged and run with it this past week. She came to me with a project idea to come up with a way to help the kids in Haiti. I told her that I was fine with it, but that the kids needed to develop action plan and it needed to be kid generated. What she has done has been incredible to say the least. One of the students in the class found an organization Souls 4 Souls that collects shoes for underdeveloped countries. They are really focusing on Haiti this month. The class decided that this is where they wanted to focus their efforts. This has really caught fire not only in this area, but other parts of the country. A lady from Omaha just called and is sending some money to buy some shoes and she heard about it on CNN!

Our kids amaze me! If you take a look in our library there are over 400 pairs of shoes that our community have brought to support the people in Haiti. The kids who were interviewed were articulate and poised. This project has made our kids better citizens and I'm extremely proud of them.

I've included the link to the story "Shoes for Survivors" that was on Channel 13: http://www.whotv.com/news
